17th March 2009 - Canolfan Gorseinon Centre, Swansea SA4 4QN
1st May 2009 - Galeri Caernarfon LL55 1SQ
Are you a community organisation or social or community enterprise wanting to become more sustainable and develop your own asset base by acquiring a building or land or even a new build project?
Have you already made a start on the process but need expert advice and guidance on what is a viability or liability and how to develop or manage your asset?
Are you a local authority or other public body or social enterprise interested in finding out more about negotiating transfer of land or buildings to community ownership?
Community Asset Development is moving up the agenda in Wales. The recently launched Welsh Assembly Government Social Enterprise Action Plan for Wales highlights the Welsh Assembly Government commitment to Community Asset Development and Transfer of Public Assets. A new £8milion Community Asset Transfer Fund has been launched in 2009 by Leighton Andrews, Deputy Minister for Regeneration which will be administered by the Big Lottery Fund. The Development Trusts Association Wales (DTA Wales) is organising two ‘How to’ seminars in Wales that draw on the ground-breaking experience of our members (development trusts own assets worth more than £450 million across the UK) and other social enterprises in Wales and across the UK.
The seminars will be held at two exemplar social enterprises actively involved in asset development in South and North Wales, Canolfan Gorseinon Centre, Nr. Swansea & the award winning Galeri Caernarfon.
The seminars will focus on understanding the policy context, opportunities and practical issues of community asset development, including:-
- The context and opportunities in Wales for asset development and transfer and disposal of land to community organisations and enterprises
- Negotiating asset transfer or purchase and viability
- Strategic and business planning and minimising risk
- Managing assets and developing skills – case studies & examples in Wales and elsewhere.
- Developing assets as a base for social and community enterprise and what to look out for.
- Financing assets – getting investment ready, using debt finance, working with partners.
- Getting help for your project – resources and advice from critical friends.
- Taking forward asset development and transfer in Wales – proactive partnerships.
Seminar Facilitators and Speakers
Lorraine Hart (Author of ‘To Have and To Hold: the DTA guide to asset development’) and Peter Williams, Director DTA Wales with Asset Development Case Studies by three Development Trusts in Wales.
