Welsh Government Launches £10 Million Fund for Community-Led Energy Projects

June 2, 2025

The Welsh Government has unveiled a £10 million capital grant scheme aimed at empowering communities across Wales to take the lead in renewable energy development. The Ynni Cymru Capital Grants Scheme is now open for applications, offering financial support to community organisations, social enterprises, public sector bodies, and SMEs committed to building Smart Local Energy Systems (SLES).

The funding is part of a wider effort to achieve Wales’ ambitious target of generating 100% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2035. The scheme supports projects that help retain the economic and social benefits of energy generation within local communities, promoting ownership, reducing carbon emissions, and building long-term resilience.

Ynni Cymru, established in 2023 by the Welsh Government, is central to this vision. Its mission is to drive community ownership of renewable energy, ensuring that the transition to a low-carbon economy is inclusive and locally grounded.

To support applicants, the Ynni Cymru team is hosting an online drop-in session via Zoom on Tuesday 3rd June, 12 – 2pm, where interested organisations can ask questions and get help with the application process. Representatives from Business Wales will also be on hand to offer advice. You can register here.
