Case Study: Electric Vehicle Car Club

In 2023 and 2024 DTA Wales was commissioned to support the creation of an electric vehicle car club platform and active network of clubs for Wales.

Working with a small consortium of three social enterprises – TrydaNi cooperative, TripTo (the trading name of Llani Car Club CIC) and Robert Owen Community Banking Fund (ROCBF), in collaboration with one third sector umbrella body (Community Energy Wales) alongside Welsh Government (Transport Division) and Transport for Wales, we successfully brokered the merger of TrydaNi and TripTo to create a single pan-Wales car club enterprise.

The successful partnership will feature TrydaNi running the car clubs alongside communities in Wales, with ROCBF providing the finance for the cars and the lease hire facility. Behind the scenes, successfully merging existing funding into the car club (some lottery funding for development and some trading income) has supported the venture, along with a new £1million commitment from the Welsh Government.

This new investment will support the emergence of a Welsh social enterprise solution to community car club provision, as a key part of WG’s transport policy commitment.

DTA Wales’s Net Zero / Innovation work played a pivotal catalytic role in bringing this about, and we continue to chair the Advisory Panel that brings Social Enterprises around the table with Welsh Government and Transport for Wales to grow and steer the community transport sector in Wales.
