Thermal Bridges

A thermal bridge (sometimes called a cold bridge) is a location in a property where there is greater heat flow out of the property compared to other areas. This can happen where a material that transfers heat very well (is a good conductor e.g. steel) is present in the building fabric and penetrates through the building element.

Thermal bridges can represent 10-15% of a building’s heat loss, and simple techniques and good planning during a retrofit project can minimise the number and severity of thermal bridges. This document will explain how.
